MOSCOW, Aug 13 (Reuters) - President Boris Yeltsin discussed

Russia's financial problems with Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko

on Thursday and gave his backing to the government's efforts to

tackle the crisis, the Kremlin said.

A spokesman said the president had underlined the need to

push through measures proposed by the government to protect the

rouble and stabilise financial markets, which slid further in

trading on Thursday.

"President Boris Yeltsin underlined the need to steadfastly

fulfil the plan of action approved by the government by

implementing stabilising laws and decrees," the presidential

press service said.

Yeltsin was speaking from Valdai in northwestern Russia,

where he is on holiday.

Kiriyenko has proposed a series of measures to tackle the

financial crisis. The State Duma, or lower house of parliament,

has approved some of them but has rejected others including

important tax and spending proposals.

Yeltsin has issued decrees to ensure some of the unapproved

measures go into effect, but Kiriyenko wants the Duma to hold an

emergency session next week to approve the remaining moves.
